Title V Pedagogy
The Title 5 Pedagogy Team has just completed its first year of activities. This year, two of the college's basic skills departments, Math and ESL, underwent training in the Student Learning Outcomes Assessment Cycle and developed pilot courses based on this cycle. (Write outcomes, objectives, assessments, rubrics, learning activities; implement; review student learning results; make revisions; implement again). The pilot courses:
ESL 930GW High Beginning Grammar and Writing
ESL 930LS High Beginning Listening and Speaking
ESL 930RV High Beginning Reading and Vocabulary
ESL 920CC ESL for Child Care Providers
were written in Fall 2005 and offered in Spring 2006. This summer we will be reviewing the data on student success, persistence and retention for students in these pilot courses and making revisions as necessary.
In the Fall of 2006, pilot courses from the ESL 940 Low Intermediate level will be offered and Math and ESL will begin a new cycle of writing new pilot courses. In addition, the English and Reading departments will come on board to begin their first cycle of pilot course development. Further, Title 5 faculty will be receiving training in culturally responsive pedagogy.
Other activities include the evaluation of the Math Learning Center, the development of a new learning community known as the Math Achievement Pathway to Success program or MAPS which increases the classroom time for Math 903 students and includes tutoring and individual counseling, the installation of an online Assessment Center, the creation of a study group program, and the purchase of a comprehensive, multi-skill ESL tutoring software program.
