CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

University of California- Riverside

Overview:

At UCR, undergraduates can contribute to the creation of new knowledge. Undergraduate research - and “research” in this context meaning any scholarly or creative activity ranging from traditional scientific experimentation to the creation of new artistic works - provides extraordinary opportunities to engage in scholarship outside of the traditional classroom. You will work closely with a faculty mentor and members of their research team on an existing problem or you can arrange for a faculty mentor for your own project. Seminars, internships, and independent research projects provide an opportunity to explore these possibilities.

Moreover, a focused quarter or two working on such a project can clarify a student’s decision about a career devoted to the subject; the experience can also help a student decide whether to undertake graduate study and which program to choose. And, of course, close interaction with a faculty member and a finished piece of serious research are among the most powerful credentials for admission to graduate or professional school. Participating in faculty research enables you to develop technical skills, explore different areas of modern research, and learn how the "real world" of scientific research operates. In addition, working in a faculty member's laboratory gives you an opportunity to closely interact with your professors and, in turn, they get to know you as an individual.
