Overview:






The National Science Foundation and the Biological Systems Engineering Department at Virginia Tech offers a unique opportunity for ten undergraduate engineering students to conduct independent research during a ten-week period under the guidance of faculty in Land and Water Resources Engineering and Bioprocess Engineering. The goal of the program is to provide a comprehensive research experience, which will motivate students toward a research career in engineering for biological systems. Students will work in teams including faculty, graduate students, and staff to conduct research and gain hands-on experience in laboratory and field research methods. Typical research projects are described later in this announcement.

Eligibility:

- Must be an undergraduate student in Engineering at a four-year college or university and a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or its possessions.
- Must have completed the junior year by June 1 and have at least one semester left prior to graduation.

  Requirements:

- A completed application form.
- Official transcripts from colleges attended showing all courses completed and grades, and a list of courses in which you are currently enrolled.

Transcripts may be sent separately.
- One letter of reference from a faculty member who can comment on your potential for academic research. If sent by you, the faculty member should prepare the letter, then seal it and sign across the seal.

The sealed envelope may be included in the application packet or sent separately. If the reference letter is emailed, please have your reference letter emailed directly from the faculty member serving as your reference. Reference letters may also be faxed.
