Program Duration:

The Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) offers outstanding undergraduates the chance to work closely with faculty in an intensive summer research experience. SROP gives undergraduate students first-hand exposure to the graduate school experience and faculty life by placing them with faculty whose work is closely related to their academic interests and career goals.

Students work under faculty mentorship either on an individual basis or as part of a research team. Research teams may also include graduate students, research scientists, and other SROP students.

Eight weeks, from May 31 through July 29.

Eligibility:

Students from groups historically underrepresented in the humanities, arts, social sciences, engineering and physical or natural sciences are eligible.
- Primary preference is given to African Americans (Blacks); Native Americans (American Indians); Hispanics/Latinos/ Latinas; Asian Americans in fields where they have been historically underrepresented; and women and men of any racial/ethnic background in fields where their gender group is significantly underrepresented.

   Applicants must:
- U.S. citizens or permanent residents
- Come from groups historically underrepresented in their fields of study
- Have a minimum overall 3.0 GPA and entering their junior or senior year
- Not graduating before December of the year in which they participate - Students must explore and select a faculty mentor in their area of interest among the Rackham Graduate Programs
- Have a genuine interest in research and university teaching as a career
- Interested in pursuing a graduate program leading to the Ph.D.
- Complete an on-line application and submit all supporting documentation before January 28.

Participants receive:
- A $4,000 stipend
- Round-trip travel expenses (flight or driving mileage, not to exceed the cost of an airline ticket from your permanent address)
- University housing in a residence hall*
- A certificate of merit and attendance in the program
- Access to campus facilities, e.g., library, athletic and health facilities**
- Opportunity to take GRE preparation course (at our expense)
*Food and athletic expenses will be the responsibility of the student.
**Students must provide documentation of health insurance coverage
