Overview:
|
We conceived
the Summer Undergraduate Research Program in Chemistry and
Biochemistry nearly a
decade ago to meet the need among community college students
for this vital academic experience. Our
program provides you with an opportunity to work with Occidental
College faculty and students on their ongoing
research. But the 10-week program involves more than just
lab work. Students also participate in weekly seminars
where research groups report on their work; take a cruise
on the Vantuna, the College's ocean-going research
vessel; attend get-acquainted barbecues and luncheons; and
present their findings to a conference of community
college faculty.

|
The
Summer Undergraduate Research Program at Occidental offers
a number of advantages: |
|
|
Students
receive hands-on experience in the use of state-of-the-art
scientific instruments and equipment.
By limiting the program to 10 students, we assure maximum
interaction with Oxy faculty and students.
We offer a greater breadth of opportunities in both traditional
and non-traditional research than those found at
similar institutions.
An emphasis on teamwork among members of each research group
ensures that even students with modest
scientific backgrounds benefit.
Full and partial stipends are given to offset research and
housing costs.
|
| |
Requirements: |
A
completed application should include the form, current community
college transcript and two letters
of reference from community college faculty familiar with
your scientific ability.
Selected applicants will be invited to Occidental for an interview
with the program director and potential research director.
We strongly encourage applications from women and minority
candidates, and all students who plan to continue their academic
career at Occidental.
The program is highly selective. We accept only 10 students
each summer. Selection is based on your
academic record, career potential and interest in the program.
