Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory

 

Overview:






The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory is a 9 or 10 week summer intern program (depending on the availability of Harvard housing) at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, MA. The program is funded by the National Science Foundation and the Smithsonian Institution.

Undergraduate students interested in a career in the Physical Science are encourage to apply for the Program. In the past, we have offered a "non-scientific research internship" such as one in the history of science.

Eligibility:

- Applicants must be U.S citizen or permanent resident and enrolled in a degree program leading to a bachelors degree.
- Students who are U. S. citizens but who are attending colleges or universities not in the United States are eligible.
- Graduating college seniors and students on a leave of absence are not eligible.

   


Potential areas of research include:

    - Observational and Theoretical Cosmology
- Extragalactic and Galactic Astronomy
- Interstellar Medium and Star formation
- Laboratory Astrophysics
- Supernovae and Supernova Remnants
- Solar and Stellar Astrophysics
