UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING BASED COMPANIES

National Institute of Health

Overview:

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is the Federal Government's primary agency for the support of biomedical research. Within its Institutes and Centers, the NIH employs approximately 14,800 people including 900 tenured faculty and nearly 3,000 postdoctoral fellows with either medical, dental, or graduate degrees. Successful applicants will join one of our research laboratories for a minimum of eight weeks between late May and August.

Some flexibility in scheduling exists to accommodate individual student needs. Start dates are determined by the selecting officials and other institute staff. At the end of the summer, students are strongly encouraged to participate in the Summer Research Program Poster Day. This provides an opportunity for students to present their work before the NIH scientific community. Students are also expected to participate in meetings and seminars in their individual laboratories.

Eligibility:

- At the time of application students must be currently enrolled at least half-time in an accredited U.S. high school, college, or graduate school.
- Students must be either United States citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Permanent residents will be asked to submit a copy of their alien registration card upon selection.

Financial Support:

Requirements:
- Students in NIH summer research programs are supported through a variety of mechanisms including the Intramural Research Training Award (IRTA) and the National Cancer Institute's Cancer Research Training Award (CRTA) programs.
- Some stipend disparities may exist between these programs. Stipend support may range from $1,400 for high school students before graduation to $2,800 per month for students with three or more years of graduate school.
- Students are responsible for their own travel and housing expenses.

- An official transcript from the school that the candidate is currently attending
- Proof of citizenship or U.S. permanent residency.
- U.S. citizens may submit a copy of their birth certificate or passport. Permanent residents will need to provide a copy of their alien registration card
- A letter from the candidate's school verifying that the individual is in good standing academically
