UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES AT SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING BASED COMPANIES

U.S. Department of Energy

Overview:

This program places students from community colleges in paid internships in Science and Engineering and Technology at any of several different locations (see Choosing a Lab on our web site). Because of the comprehensive nature of this program, many of the participants have felt it has had an enormous influence on their careers. Students work with scientists or engineers on projects related to the laboratories' research programs. They also attend career planning and numerous training/informational sessions. The different laboratories offer different research opportunities.

Eligibility:

- Students who are majoring in any branch of science, math, engineering and technology are encouraged to apply.
- This program is not a job. It is an internship and is intended to support the intellectual and professional development of students who have a sincere desire to be fully involved in a program that offers an intensive, mentored scientific research experience.
- It is particularly helpful to students who have not had a chance to work in an advanced research environment and want to explore career opportunities in science, engineering and technology.

  Requirements:

- Complete the full ten-week program
- Complete entrance and exit surveys on the EDULINK website
- Behave in a responsible and professional manner
- Submit a complete copy of a Research Paper or Power Point presentation (depending on the individual laboratory's policy)
- Submit an abstract of their research in the required format
- Attend all scheduled events including lectures, tours and group activities
- Participants should expect to spend more than 40 hours per week and more than 8 hours per day in activities and/or research related to their internships
