CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

University of California- Davis

Overview:

The Transfer Student Fellows Program (TSFP) is an intensive program for transfer students interested in careers in the biological sciences. TSFP, sponsored by the UC Davis Division of Biological Sciences through grant support from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and the National Institute of Health - Initiative for Minority Student Development, enriches your transfer year at UC Davis by providing you with immediate access to the excitement and challenge of the research university. The goals of the program are to prepare you for course work at UC Davis, to develop a sense of community among participants, and to facilitate your participation in on-campus undergraduate research. As a TSFP participant, you will be enrolled in a UC Davis course during the summer session prior to your first quarter on campus. You are also enrolled in a specially designed TSFP seminar course which begins during the summer and continues throughout the transfer year. The TSFP seminar is a place for community-building among participants, helping you become involved in important aspects of campus life including direct participation in undergraduate research during your transfer year.

Eligibility:

Completion of one year each of calculus and general chemistry with a GPA of at least 2.8
Admission to UC Davis for the Fall Quarter.
We strongly recommend that students complete one year each of biology and organic chemistry prior to transfer.
Preference is given to students who are transferring to one of the majors sponsored by the Division of Biological Sciences (Biochemistry and Molecular Biology; Biological Sciences; Cell Biology; Evolution and Ecology; Exercise Biology; Genetics; Microbiology; Neurobiology, Physiology and Behavior; Plant Biology) but students who otherwise qualify and are transferring to any major with a biological science emphasis are welcome to apply.

  Application:
In late January and early February, applications for TSFP will be mailed to all community college students who have a signed Transfer Admission Agreement (TAA) in a biological science major at UC Davis. Applications are also available from the Transfer Office at your community college or by contacting the TSFP Office at UC Davis. The application includes a personal statement by the applicant and two letters of evaluation from community college faculty who know you and your academic record well. TSFP applications and letters of evaluation are due by April 30th. The TSFP admissions committee will review applications during May and will notify applicants of committee decisions in early June. Applicants should note that the TSFP application is separate from your application to transfer to UC Davis and that students who are not admitted to UC Davis cannot participate in TSFP.
