Caltech’s
MURF program provides support for talented undergraduates
to spend a summer working in a research laboratory on the
Caltech campus. The MURF program aims to increase the representation
of underrepresented students in science and engineering
graduate programs and to make Caltech’s programs more
visible to students not traditionally exposed to Caltech.
The program supports Caltech’s commitment to training
a diverse set of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM)
leaders. Applications will be considered from eligible students
without regard to gender, race, or ethnicity. Students accepted
into the MURF program will be contacted directly by the
MURF office for consultation about the specific laboratory
and research project that would be best matched to the student’s
area of interest.
MURF
students are expected to communicate with their Caltech
mentor(s) prior to arriving in the summer. In consultation
with their mentor(s), each student will write a work plan
describing the nature of the proposed research, why it is
important, and how it fits into the ongoing work in the
mentor’s laboratory. The purpose of the paper is to
help students to become familiar with background materials
relevant to their summer research project.
