II. Oral Communication from the Public

Dan Matarangas announced that an interim Director of Admissions and records has been selected; Jessie Gates has come to Mission College from Grossmont College with extensive experience.

Dianne Pette reported that Mission College is scheduled for a matriculation site visit this year. There is a possibility that the visit may be postponed to next fall. The Matriculation Advisory Steering Committee is working diligently, and several training sessions will be scheduled for next semester. There is a need to refresh the college community on the status of matriculation, particularly in reference to prerequisites, corequisites, the challenge process, waivers, and the like. In addition. the committee is planning to conduct a survey on flex day scheduled for January 11, 2001. The survey results will, hopefully, provide the committee with a general sense of what information faculty needs to be brought up to date on matriculation matters. Diane also advised that she and Chris Olson are preparing a Matriculation Manual for distribution that will provide all the necessary information on matriculation.

III. Joint Meeting w Division Chair Council to Review Applications for New Faculty

Positions

Lee explained that the time line as dictated by the approved process has been delayed, partly due to the college’s work on the E&FMP and Accreditation Self Study.

Lee outlined the process as follows: today, the members of the Academic Senate and the members of the Division Chair Council (DCC) will review 26 requests that have been submitted for new faculty positions, listen to supporting arguments, and have an opportunity to pose questions to the presenter. After today’s discussion, the Senate representatives and the Division Chairs will jointly review the list and consider ranking. Each division chair will submit the division’s rankings to Lee by Monday at 10:00 a.m., and the Office of Instruction will tally the results. The results will be discussed at the Division Chair Council meeting on Monday, December 4th, and a recommendation will be forwarded to the next Senate meeting. Lee explained that approximately sixteen to eighteen positions are to be filled next year; the district received nine positions for Fall 2001, and all nine positions were give to Mission College, with West Valley College keeping two buffer positions (2 FTE). In addition, West Valley and Mission College will be filling a number of positions vacated by retirees.

The presentations for each request were made by the appropriate division chair and followed by a brief question and answer period. The requests for positions are listed below in alphabetical order:

Allied Health ESL - 2

Career Resources Network Fire Protection Technology

Child Development - 1 Foreign Languages

Child Development - 2 Graphic & Multimedia Design

Counseling/ACCESS Director (0.5) Library - 1

Counseling/GE 1 Library - 2

Counseling/Info Tech Mathematics - 1

Counseling/MESA Director Mathematics - 2

Counseling/McClellan Replacement Physical Education

DISC Psychiatric Technology

English/Communications - 1 Reading

During the discussions, it was clear that the future direction of the college must be considered when ranking the above positions. The above positions will be ranked, with #1 being the highest priority, and as stated, the rankings will be brought to the Academic Senate meeting by the DCC on December 7, 2001, for further discussion and approval.

IV. Adjournment

The meeting was adjourned at 3:50 p.m. (M/S/U - Akers-Martin/Cheung). These minutes are respectfully submitted by Grace Hazán, Academic Senate Secretary.
