2. Approval of Agenda
Betty
recommended we accommodate guests, review second readings and admin changes. Lynn recommended we move the Library
courses above ESL courses. It was
MSC (Zummo/Dworak) to approve the agenda as revised.
3. Approval of Summary Minutes –
October 7, 2002
It
was MSC (Charland/Zummo) to approve the summary minutes of October 7, 2002.
4.
Course Approvals
a.
New Courses – First Reading
(1)
CIT*111 – Servlets & JSP – 3.0 Units
The first initial of the author is missing on the textbook listing. Jason
stated this course has been articulated with Graphic Design and CIS
departments.
(2)
CIT*112 – Advanced Web Programming – 3.0 Units
Title was changed to “Client,
Server and Web Management”.
The catalog and schedule descriptions were revised slightly. Jason
stated this course has been articulated with Graphic Design and CIS
departments.
(3) CIT*113
– Database Programming for the Web – 3.0 Units
Title was changed to
“Database for the Web”.
The catalog and schedule descriptions were revised slightly. Jason
stated this course has been articulated with Graphic Design and CIS
departments.
(4)
COMM*022 – Voice & Articulation – 2.0 Units
Jane Patton was present to defend
this new course and answer questions.
Jane stated this was not intended to be an accent reduction class, but
more of improving voice and articulation.
It was approved to go to second read.
(5)
ENGL*066 – Applied
Grammar/Punctuation – 2.0 Units
The catalog description was
revised. Discussion ensued about
the skill level of the course and the degree applicability. Jonathan Brennan stated the work in
this course it not the same as they would be doing in a lower level
course. He stated the missing
piece is that there is not enough time in other writing classes for students to
analyze and assess their own work.
This course allows students to bring in writing assignments from other
classes so they can analyze their work.
The English Department is sending students to do this kind of work
elsewhere so they decided to offer this course which allows instructor to help
a larger number of students. The
discussion was tabled due to lack of time. This item will remain on the agenda as a first read.
(6)
ESL*950G – Intermediate Grammar – 3.0 Units
Kara explained that as part of the
revisions of the ESL curriculum, ESL is looking at the top three levels
pedagogically. People are seeing
the importance of combining reading and writing; pulling out grammar to focus a
little bit more; integrating reading and writing and pulling out grammar (will
be a separate course). Kara
explained the new numbering system: retaining same number for all courses in a
level. Discussion ensued about the
outcomes on the course and Kara volunteered to remove numbers 8 and 9.
(7)
LIBR*010 – Basic Information Competency – 1.0 Unit
Betty will ask if the library would
be willing to change the title.
CRC reviewed the catalog and schedule descriptions. Is this course transferable to CSU?
Probably not IGETC.
b.
New Courses – Second Reading
(1)
ART*011 – The History of Modern Design – 3.0 Units
The ENGL*108A pre-requisite was changed to an advisory. It was MSC (Ensminger/Zummo) to approve
ART*011 011 contingent on Jennifer
receiving MCF form from Anna Szabados.
Paperwork was received but the packet was incomplete (missing completed
MCF form).
(2)
GDES*011 – The History of Modern Design – 3.0
Units
The ENGL*108A pre-requisite was
changed to an advisory. It was
MSC (Ensminger/Charland) to
approve GDES*011 contingent on Jennifer receiving MCF form from Anna Szabados.
Paperwork was received but the packet was incomplete (missing completed MCF
form).
Discussion ensued about the proposer’s requesting ENGL*108A as a
pre-requisite rather than an advisory.
If the proproser
wants to make ENGL*108A a pre-requisite, a course revision will need to be
submitted and allow for the highest level of scrutiny since the pre-requisite
course is outside of the department.
Dianne reported that there is a level of validation and the department
would have to provide data to prove a student would not have reasonable
expectations in the course without having taken the pre-requisite. This is described on page 15 of the CRC
Manual. Dianne will research this
topic in Title V.
c.
Revision of Courses
(1) BIOSC*016 – Marine Biology – 3.0
Units
Lab units were added and lecture units were reduced because of the nature of
the course and hours spent doing hands-on activities. It was MSC (Charland/Dworak) to approve revisions to
BIOSC*016. Paperwork was received
and is complete.
(2)
ENGL*905 – English
Fundamentals – 3.0 Units
It was MSC (Ensminger/Zummo)
to approve the revision to ENGL*905.
Dianne stated that going ahead with the pre/co-requisite issue is not as easy
as we thought because it is a major programming issue in Datatel
Colleague. Betty Ensminger
suggested we keep the curriculum as is in principal. Ray Charland suggested we list both the pre- and
co-requisite in the schedule and the catalog—this may be additional,
manual work done by Hoan—Jennifer will check and report back next
meeting. Paperwork was received and is complete.
(3)
PT*068 –Medical
Surgical Nursing Theory – 7.0 Units
Removed the BIOSC*055 pre-requisite.
Paperwork was received and is complete.
(4)
PT*069 – Medical

Certificates/Degrees
a.
New Certificates/Degrees
b.
Revision to Certificates/Degrees
(1)
Biological Sciences AS Degree – 18.0 Units
Added BIOSC*007 as one of the electives in the right column. It was MSC (Dworak/Charland) to approve
revision to Biological Sciences AS Degree.
6. New Business
a. Report on Learning Communities
b. Betty announced that she is receiving
paperwork from proposers. Jennifer
distributed a copy of the paperwork checklist and will send it electronically
to the representatives. Betty
expressed a need for CRC reps to work with their constituents. Reps also should be sharing deadlines
and forms. Kara suggested CRC
manuals be made available.
c. Jennifer asked for paperwork to be submitted by 11:30 a.m. on day CRC will review (second reads, revisions, and administrative changes) for review prior to the meeting. It is not necessary to have Alex or the Articulation Officer’s signature at that time because if the paperwork is complete, Jennifer will bring it to the meeting for their review and signature. It is very difficult for Jennifer to review curriculum paperwork during the meeting.
d. There will be a special Tech Review meeting on Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 in S1-401.
e. There will be an additional full CRC meeting on Monday, 10/28/02 from 2:00 to 4:00 pm in S1-401.
