5.       New Business

a.       GE Transfer for American History & Institutions
Don brought up a valid point about the importance of articulating degrees and certificates with other colleges to see what they are requiring.  Alex will make a point of this in his future training sessions on curriculum.  It was recommended that Don send out an email message explaining this to all faculty.  Don distributed a handout that listed resource documents for CSU and UC.  Don will send this document to Jennifer for distribution with the next CRC meeting agenda and minutes.
Don distributed a copy of a letter from CSU dated January 7, 2003 about the analysis of the coursework used at Mission in certifying fulfillment of the US History, Constitution and American Ideals requirements.  The letter basically says we’ve done a good job but more needs to be done to make Mission’s courses acceptable for GE transfer.  If a student takes a set of courses covering U.S. History, the Constitution and American Ideals, they are given a notice on their transcript, which means that every CSU accepts it.  The certification means that students finish GE and satisfy American History and Institutions.  A matrix was attached explaining the areas that can be corrected to make the courses acceptable.  There was also mention of the textbooks that are being used.  Don recommended CRC request that the department develop changes.  Don would be willing to sit with the faculty involved.  He believes it would be nice for the faculty to contact colleagues at CSU and maybe get copies of their course outlines.  We will communicate through the Social Science representative the importance of updating these courses.  We have some very old course outlines that Don is distributing but more and more colleges are requesting updated outlines.  Updating course outlines has been worked into Program Review and the Academic Senate will turn their attention to this after graduation requirements discussion is completed.

b.       IMPAC (Intersegmental Major Preparation & Curriculum)
Don has been actively involved.  In the last year, several reps throughout the state have been hammering out the IMPAC document in that computer science area.  There is a document that has come out of Carnegie-Melon and MIT that lists competencies.  The proposal is that the ACM IEEE document could be used as a reference point for community colleges, UC and CSU.  IC Irvine is extremely close to checking their courses against this list and listing their course outlines on the web.  This model of articulation allows college-by-college access.  Don is checking with Sallie Wisner to determine the cost and difficulty of putting outlines on the web.  Don would like CRC to take this on as a project and to get with the various faculty to clean up their outlines and possibly revise the form to make it easier to read/find information.  Don believes Math may be heading this way also.

Dianne, Yolanda and Alex volunteered to visit West Valley and learn about the Fiesta Software.
