             IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE MISSION COLLEGE ACADEMIC SENATE:

 

The MC Academic Senate is seeking nominations for the Stanback-Stroud Diversity Award, sponsored by the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges (ASCCC), with support from the Foundation for California Community Colleges.   This award is intended to recognize faculty in California community colleges who work to promote the success of our diverse student population.  The award was developed to acknowledge the work of faculty making special contributions in the area of student success for diverse students.  Each college senate may nominate one faculty member to receive this prestigious honor, which includes a cash award of $500.  All faculty, inside and outside the classroom, are eligible for consideration.  Four recipients, one from each area of the state, will be chosen and honored at the 2003 Spring Plenary Session.

 

The candidate should have a combination of the following criteria:

 

1.  Implemented strategies and techniques (instruction, counseling, library skills) that have proven to be particularly successful in serving historically underachieving students;

2.  Demonstrated help to students to encourage retention and success in classes;

3.  Demonstrated help to students to reach their goals, whether they be occupational, transfer, or other;

4.  Demonstrated encouragement of students to become part of campus and/or community life activities; and

5.  Made a significant contribution to the creation of a campus climate that is supportive of the diversity of the campus community in language, religion, creed, ethnicity, culture, gender identification, sexual orientation, physical ability, styles of teaching and learning.  Such contributions include but are not limited to:

      *  Stood up for principles against adversity in the name of developing or implementing effective equity practices;

      *  Made an impact on recruitment or hiring of diverse faculty; or

      *  Made a significant impact on the curriculum and curriculum resources to be more responsive to and inclusive of diverse student needs and interests.

6.  Developed/implemented programmatic changes that resulted in all students being more equitably served.

7.  Other

 

The nominees will be rated by the ASCCC on a combination of the seven criteria listed above.  No nominee is expected to score in each category.  Any number of the 70 total possible points may be awarded for one or any combination of categories.  A personal philosophy statement of diversity, as well as an indication of how the candidate's work is important and what goals are sought is to be included.

 

If you are interested in nominating yourself or a colleague for this award, please complete the enclosed candidate's philosophy statement form and the support form, which is to be completed by someone in a position of responsibility (faculty colleague, community member, student government president, college president, department chair, division chair) who knows the candidate's work in the area of diversity.  Please submit an electronic and a hard copy of both documents to the Academic Senate by Noon, Thursday, January 30, 2003.
