Technology Studies Overview

A brief comparison of available options in Technology Studies

Industrial Technology (IT)

Those who enter the IT program are probably more interested in transferring to SJSU to obtain the BSIT degree, since all eleven lower-division TECH courses directly transfer from Mission College. In addition, the IT option is more general, preparing students for a wide range of job titles, rather than focusing on a specific concentration.

The IT program offers two major areas of concentration:

  • Computer Networking Technology
  • Manufacturing Systems
Design Drafting Technology (DRAFT)

Those who enter the DRAFT program will combine artistry, graphics, mathematics and science. Using the latest Computer aided design (CAD) tools—such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Protel—, you will work alongside Engineers and Architects to create skyscrapers, residential homes, automobiles, cell phones, multimedia centers, furniture, computers, spaceships, aircraft, and etc. Especially important to the college certified drafter (working for a Designer or Engineer) are completed detail CAD drawings.

Those who enter the Design Drafting program may choose from the following career fields:

  • Electronic Technology
  • Mechanical Technology
  • Electro/Mechanical
Computer Electronics Networking Technology (CNET)

Those who enter the CNET program are probably more interested in obtaining the AS degree, but leaving open the option of a four-year degree. Furthermore, they may not interested in taking the specific physics, chemistry, calculus and English courses required of the IT students.

  • Those who take the Computer Electronics (CET) option wish to strongly focus on electronics and computers, taking such courses as A+ certification and RF theory—not open to IT students.
  • Those who take the Computer Networking (CNT) option wish an advanced, in-depth focus on networking—and nothing but networking and related topics. The AS degree in CNT requires eleven courses in networking, versus just three for the ASIT degree. Selected courses are transferable to various four-year university programs.

All three options can be completed within 18 months at a cost of less than $4,000, including books and tuition. Those with demanding schedules can take advantage of evening and weekend classes.
