Semiconductor Manufacturing Technician
Program InformationDeveloped through a partnership with major semiconductor industry firms, Mission College's Semiconductor Manufacturing Technology Program is designed to prepare students for entry level positions in this rapidly growing, high skill - high wage industry. The program provides "hands on" training in semiconductor fabrication including cleanroom procedures, monitoring the manufacturing process, and maintaining and troubleshooting manufacturing tool sets (equipment).
Companies hire individuals with associate degrees
in semiconductor manufacturing technology,
microelectronics, electronics, or related fields as Technicians who:
Graduates of the program will
possess a broad range of skills including strong backgrounds in mathematics,
basic electronics, physics, chemistry, communication, and teamwork and
will be trained to test, operate, and maintain equipment, analyze processes
and assure quality control related to microchip and wafer fabrication.
In addition to classroom instruction, students in the program have the
opportunity to participate in employer internships to gain first-hand knowledge
and experience in the semiconductor industry. Mission College, established in
1975, is the complete community college for the Silicon Valley providing
outstanding transfer and vocational programs as well as general education
and personal enrichment courses. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley,
Mission College is within walking distance
of the bus and lightrail and offers easy freeway access
from US 101 or Highway 237 and the Great America Parkway. The area contains
a diverse mixture of social, cultural, religious, and ethnic heritages
and is home to major aerospace and high technology corporations. The U.S. electronics industry,
which includes the semiconductor sector, employs 2.6 million people and
is expected to grow rapidly. From 1992 to 1996, the U.S. semiconductor
industry grew by 20%, creating 43,000 new jobs. In the next 5 years the
industry expects to hire 40,000 technicians alone. Since the use of semiconductors
has expanded from computers to other consumer products such as cars, cellular
phones, and satellite tv, the demand for workers has produced a labor shortage
and has increased the competition for and the starting salaries of skilled
technicians. Annual starting salaries range
from $30,000 to $35,000 with excellent
benefits packages, including 3-4 day work weeks, paid medical and
dental insurance, tuition reimbursement, paid relocation, stock options
and bonuses. Contact Information
