Phil has been with Mission College since 1979 where his responsibilities have included teaching health education, physical education theory and activity classes, the Fire Technology physical agility class and serving as department chair on several occasions during that time period. When the Fitness Specialist program was established in 1989, Phil became involved in teaching most of the theory classes in that program which include courses such as anatomy and kinesiology, exercise physiology, sports nutrition, sports injuries and fitness testing. Prior to coming to Mission, Phil taught at the University of Oklahoma and the University of Nebraska.
Phil was the author of a weight training book that is still being used by some of the instructors at Mission entitled, "One Rep Max - A Guide To Beginning Weight Training." Phil has been a presenter at numerous state professional conferences/conventions and workshops and has held many leadership positions in the State Association of Physical Educators (CAHPERD) as well.
As an athlete, Phil was starting guard on his Connecticut high school's state championship basketball team and was selected to the first team all tournament team. In college, Phil was named to the All New England Small College Football All Star team as a defensive safety. And in graduate school, as a player/coach for the University of Colorado Lacrosse team, he was named to the Rocky Mountain All Star Team as a defenseman.
Phil has continued to stay active over the years participating in triathlons, marathons, bicycle centuries and double centuries, bowling, ballroom dancing, swimming and weight training. He enjoys teaching very much and hopes that through that medium he can help people become more active and healthier.
