All dance classes are designed to improve coordination, posture and rhythm as well as strength, flexibility and endurance. An opportunity for informal performance is also made possible.

003F • DANCE: HIP HOP - FUNK STYLES 1.0 unit

Lab 3 hours (Lab 1 1/2 hours)
This course will introduce the student to the fundamentals and choreography of hip hop funk styles (example: locking, popping, boogalooing, waving, etc.). Challenging and complex routines will be introduced. Students will be expected to perform a hip hop routine reflecting their own style and interpretation. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated to three times.

This course for intermediate level jazz dance students is designed to increase the student’s skill and understanding in the varied theories, styles and techniques of the jazz idiom. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated to total 4 units.

003L • MODERN DANCE-BEGINNING 1.0 unit

This course for beginning students in Modern Dance will provide the knowledge and practice necessary for gaining personal skills and experience in dance technique and composition. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated to total 4 units.

003M • MODERN DANCE-INTERMEDIATE 1.0 unit
Lab 3 hours
This course for intermediate modern dance students is designed to increase the student’s skill in techniques and composition. The student will increase their insight into the creative process to further develop the body as an instrument for communication. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated to total 4 units.

003N • CHOREOGRAPHY FOR MODERN AND JAZZ DANCE
2.0 units
Lab 6 hours
This course will emphasize the choreography of solo and group dances. Dances will be staged and performed at community and district theaters. Class members will be both choreographers and performers. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003P • REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE IN DANCE 2.0 units
Lab 6 hours
This course is designed to give the student an opportunity to choreograph, rehearse, and perform dances in an informal setting at the college. Emphasis will be on group participation in all areas of dance production including performance and technical aspects of performance. The course will include rehearsals for the major performance at the theater. The course will include dance warm-ups and techniques; improvisational studies; choreographic studies; group and solo rehearsals of finished dances; class, college and community performances. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003R • BEGINNING MUSICAL THEATER DANCE 1.0 unit
Lab 3 hours
This course introduces the student to the practice of movement and dance skills required for the musical theater. Dance sequences from musicals, utilizing theatrical styles from the 20’s to the present are taught and staged. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003S • BEGINNING SOCIAL DANCE 1.0 unit

Lab 3 hours (Lab 1 1/2 hours)
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the basic forms of social dance. Dance posture, rhythm and social practice as related to the dance experiences will also be introduced to help students become proficient in this basic dance style. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003T • BEGINNING COUNTRY WESTERN LINE DANCE 1.0 unit
Lab 3 hours
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the basic forms and social practice of Country Western Line Dancing. Students proficiency will be developed in the steps and styles of this dance form. Credit/No Credit Option.
May be repeated three times.

003U • BEGINNING TAP DANCE 1.0 unit
Lab 3 hours
This course is designed to acquaint the student with the basic technique of tap dance. Style, rhythm, posture, and improvisation will also be introduced to help students become proficient in this basic dance style.Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003V • SOCIAL DANCE: INTERMEDIATE 1.0 unit

Advisory: PE 003S
This course is designed to acquaint the student with more advanced forms of social dance. Emphasis will be on learning dance steps that are more challenging and complex than the beginning level class. Style and techique will be stressed as well. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003W • DANCE: BEGINNING HIP HOP 1.0 unit

Lab 3 hours (Lab 1 1/2 hours)
This course will introduce the student to the fundamentals of hip hop/street funk. Students will learn general patterns as well as the basics of creating their own style and routines. Information will be presented describing the history and cultureal development of hip hop as a dance form. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003X • DANCE: INTERMEDIATE HIP HOP 1.0 unit

This course is designed to introduce the student to selected Latin and rhythmic dances. There will be an emphasis on alignment and posture, etiquette, leading and following. For intermediate students enrolled, more advanced techniques, variations, spontaneous leading and following, elegance and style, and performance skills will be emphasized. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.

003Z • SOCIAL DANCE: SWING 1.0 unit
Lab 3 hours
Advisory: PE 003S or equivalent
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This course is designed to introduce the student to swing dance including West Coast, East Coast, Jive, Jitterbug, Shag and Lindy Hop. There will be an emphasis on alignment and posture, etiquette, leading and following. For intermediate students enrolled, more advanced techniques, variations, spontaneous leading and following, elegance and style, and performance skills will be emphasized. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated three times.
