BEGINNING BADMINTON -

I. Course Description

This course will introduce the student to the basic fundamentals and strategies of the game of badminton.  The main emphasis of this course will be the basic skills, drills, and rules of badminton. 

II. Course Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student will:

A.  Use proper footwork to play Badminton on balance.
B.  Demonstrate the primary strokes-

  • Serve, Overhead, Clear, Drop Shot, Smash, Drive, and Around the Head.
C.  Demonstrate basic singles and doubles strategies.
D.  Understand and apply the Rules of Badminton.

III. Expectations & Regulations
Students in this class are expected to:

A.  Adhere to the student rights and responsibilities as outlined in the Mission College Catalog:

 
1.  Participate actively and appropriately in class without reservation.
  • If the student consecutively misses the first two days of class, this student will be dropped    from the course. 
  2.  Demonstrate respect for others and the instructor by arriving on time for class.
  3.  Comply with the policies, regulations, and procedures of the District.

B.  Accept responsibility for accomplishing course objectives by completing assigned exercises

C.  Exhibit professional behavior during class.  Cheating and plagiarism are unacceptable standards
       of behavior.  Any incident of cheating or plagiarism will result in a failing grade.
  D. Wear proper athletic attire.  No street shoes will be allowed on the gym floor. 
No black soles!! Court  shoes or shoes that   
        have lateral support are recommended.  Also, please wear gym clothes.  Street clothes are not recommended for this class.

A.  Training Drills during class

B.   Skills demonstrations:
  1.  Shadow proper stroke mechanics on all strokes.
  2.  Demonstrate the proper footwork on all strokes.
  3.  Demonstrate the 4 basic serves.
  4.  Demonstrate Overhead clear, smash, and drop shot.
  5.  Demonstrate Underhand clear, drive and drop shot.
  6.  Demonstrate the Around the head stroke.

C.  Rules and Play:
  1.  Play a game of singles with the proper rules, scoring, and positioning.
  2.  Play a game of doubles with the proper rules, scoring, and positioning.

V. Adding, Dropping, Grading Criteria
A.  Adding
             1.  Students will be added according to available space.  If the class is full, names will be taken and a lottery will be 
                  drawn when space is made available.  The student wanting to add must be present to partake in the lottery.  If stu
                  dents are not present for the lottery their names will be dropped from the lottery list.  One lottery will take place on
                  the last class day before the add deadline (approx. 2 weeks).   
             2.  Students will only be added until the official add date posted by the college.

  B.  Dropping
   1.  If the student consecutively misses the first two days of class, this student will be dropped         from the course. 
   2.  Students may drop at any time.  Credit will be posted according to the date dropped.

  C. Grading is based on a point system for assignments that meet course objectives.

  D. Grading scale:  A=200 - 180 pts.: B=179 - 160 pts.; C=159 - 140 pts.; Passing = 120 pts.

  1.  Training Drills  (40%)  16 X   5 points    80 points
  2.  Skills Demonstrations  (15%)    6 X   5 points    30 points
  3.  Rules and Play  (30%)    2 X 25 points    50 points
 
5.  Quizzes   (15%)    2 X 20 points    40points
       TOTAL        200 Points.
