BEGINNING BOWLING

I. Course Description
PE007EThis course is designed to teach the basic fundamentals of bowling to the student to increase the student's appreciation of the game's value as a lifelong leisure time activity.  Mastery of these skills will enable the student to progress to another level of bowling.

II. Course Objectives
During completion of this course, the student will:
A.  Have fun bowling.
B.  Develop good beginner level skills by learning the preparation, approach, and delivery.
C.  Learn and practice both straight and hook ball.
D.  Develop strike and spare ball control and consistency.
E.  Roll at 7 and 10 pin spares confidently.
F.  Create an effortless delivery.

III. Expectations
Students in this class are expected to:
A.  Adhere to the student rights and responsibilities as outlined in the Mission College Catalog:

 
1.  Participate actively and appropriately in class without reservation.
  2.  Demonstrate respect for others and the instructor by arriving on time for class.
  3.  Comply with the policies, regulations, and procedures of the District.
B.  Accept responsibility for accomplishing course objectives by completing assigned exercises
.
C.  Exhibit professional behavior during class.  Cheating and plagiarism are unacceptable standards
       of behavior.  Any incident of cheating or plagiarism will result in a failing grade.
D.  There is a fee for this class.  Students are required to pay for three (3) games each class period.     
      Payment must be made before the class period ends.

IV. Assignments
A.   Skills demonstrations:
  1.  Selecting and properly handling the bowling ball.
  2.  Know the proper grip, stance, and alignment in preparation to the approach.
  3.  Using a four step approach, demonstrate the proper approach and delivery.
  4.  Demonstrate a straight and hook ball.
  5.  Know the proper use of spot bowling.

B.  Record daily scores - 3 games daily

C.  Rules and Play:
  1.  Know the basic laws and etiquette of bowling.
   a.  Dimensions and characteristics of the lane
   b.  Pin specifications
   c.  Ball specifications
2. Be able to manually keep score.
a.  Do practice sheets
D.  Three (3) Quizzes



V. Adding, Dropping, Grading Criteria
A.  Adding

  1. Students will be added according to available space.  If the class is full, names will be taken
and a  lottery will be drawn when space is made available.  The student wanting to add must be present to partake in the lottery.  If students are not present for the lottery their names will be dropped from the lottery list.  One lottery will take place on the last class day before the add deadline (approx. 2 weeks).   
  2.  Students will only be added until the official add date posted by the college.
  B.  Dropping
1.  If the student consecutively misses the first two days of class, this student will be dropped from the course. 
   2.  Students may drop at any time.  Credit will be posted according to the date dropped.
C. Grading is based on a point system for assignments that meet course objectives.

  Grading scale:  A=200 - 180 pts.; B=179 - 160 pts.; C=159 - 140 pts.; Passing = 120pts

  2.  Manual Score Sheets  (7.5%)    15 points    15 points
  3.  Scoring, Rules, and Play (7.5%)    15        points    15 points
 
4.  Quizzes   (45%)    3  X 30 points    90 points
