Management and Supervision Dept - Student Profiles
Human Resource Management Certificate Program
Here are some profiles of students currently taking classes in the
Human Resource Management certificate program.
Meet Monica Hernandez.
Human Resource Management Certificate Spring 2010
Here is what Monica had to say about her certificate program:
"I graduated in May 2010 with an A.S.
Business and the Human Resource Management Certificate, plus two other
certificates. I think the HRM certificate is excellent supplement to
the business degree for me, as I am not continuing on to a 4 year
degree. My internship was updating the Employee Handbook at my job. I
still work there in bookkeeping and am in the process of being
promoted, in part because of the degee and certificate I received and
ability to help my manager with some HR responsibilities. I am
still involved with keeping the handbook current and am frequently the
"go-to" person for questions about time off policy."
Meet Ivy Nguyen.
Human Resource Management Certificate Spring 2010
Here is what Ivy had to say about her certificate program:
"I have found the program to be
helpful as well as a focal point on my resume as I have not yet
completed my degree. I recently got a new job as a human resources
coordinator. I feel that the certificate gave me a nudge above the
competition. I have found the information taught in business law to be
most useful in my everyday work life. Thank you for the opportunity to
learn."
Meet Maureen Takagi.
Human Resource Management Certificate Spring 2010
Here is what Maureen had to say about her human resource internship:
"The project that I worked on was
related to behavioral interviewing and using different interviewing
techniques to find the right talent for a specific position. I
have found this very helpful in interviewing candidates and
interpreting responses. I am seeing the benefits of using a
different interviewing style and I am better able to make decisions on
candidates than prior to working on the project. The course also helped me to understand
that a full-time HR representative is not the direction I want to go;
however, being a better, more informed manager is a great outcome."
Meet Nicole Phillips.
Human Resource Management Certificate Spring 2009
Here is what Nicole had to say about her human resource internship:
"I completed an internship at AchieveKids during Spring
2009. I was the Human Resources intern and was supervised by
Barbara Johnson, Director of Human Resources. AchieveKids is a
school for kids ages 5-22 that have mental disorders and/or are
developmentally challenged.
The organization provides educational services in a non-public school
setting as well as counseling services for the clients.
AchieveKids has locations in San Jose as well as Palo Alto.
At the beginning of my internship, I wrote out two learning objectives
that I wanted to accomplish during my internship at AchieveKids.
These learning objectives are as follows:
- To learn the various components and
negotiations involved in union contracts.
- To learn about benefits offered in the
organization and the changing COBRA laws.
I feel that I have accomplished and
surpassed these objectives during my two and a half months of
internship.
Initially when I began my internship at AchieveKids, I was asked to
research other union schools in the area to compare and contrast all of
the elements involved in the union contracts. AchieveKids was
going to be going into union negotiations soon and wanted to ensure
that what they offered employees was comparable to other schools in the
area. I began doing this by completely reading the union contract
for AchieveKids and becoming familiar with the terminology used in the
contract. I then created a spreadsheet that showed all of the
comparisons for each school that I researched as well as weach aspect
of the contract.
Another project that I assisted with was the annual organizing and
clearing of confidential human resource documents. I had the
chance to learn what documents needed to be kept for a certain amount
of time. I also shredded many documents that were no longer
needed but needed to be disposed of properly since they contain
sensitive information. During this time, I also assisted with
gathering and organizing all employee documentation that was needed for
an upcoming audit.
Before I started this internship, I was aware of the basic tasks that
were involved in the Human Resources department. However, I had
very little experience. This internship provided me the
opportunity to learn about the many laws and requirements that govern
the human resource department in any organization."
Meet Shweta
SrivaStava. Human
Resource Management Certificate Spring
2009
Here is what Shweta had to say about
her human resource internship:
"I started my
internship in Spring
2009 at Community Gatepath.
Community Gatepath is the largest non-profit organization actively
working in San Mateo County. For nearly 90 years, Community
Gatepath has been helping children and adults with disabilities achieve
personal goals and live full and productive lives in school, the
community, home, and the workplace.
At the beginning
of my internship I
developed specific learning objectives and tried to learn as much as I
could to achieve my goal. Throughout the internship I have maintained a
daily journal of task and projects which show what tasks I completed in
a day.
My projects
varied from compensation,
benefits, to policies of the company, and recruitments. I compiled and
created database for employees and volunteers for their FBI, DMV, TB,
physical clearance which were some of the requirements laid by the
company. I screened the exit interview questionnaire and created a
database which highlighted the feedback from the employees. I
participated in compiling the paperwork for all the new employees which
included: (1) information on their benefits program (dental, medical,
401K, Flex plan, FMLA) and insurance program; (2) personal information,
like their performance reviews, their application for the job, offer
letter; and also (3) forms they need to sign as required by Community
Gatepath, Federal and state laws, for example, W2 tax forms, I-9 forms,
Equal Employment opportunity data form, statement acknowledging
requirement to report suspected abuse of dependant adults and elders,
child abuse, sexual harassment, security access request, acceptable
computer use statement, work schedule agreement, Notice of Employee
Rights, EDD (Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certificate), criminal
record statement, and employee data input form. I was actively involved
in I-9 auditing.
I also created an
applicant tracking
database which could give information about the candidates who apply
for various positions. I posted job openings on different college
websites and updated them from time to time. I was also involved with
telephonic interviews and one exit interview.
The internship
experience was very
enriching and a great learning experience for me. I approached my
internship with a positive attitude – with a mindset to be open to any
kind of work as long as I was learning something new and useful. The
knowledge which I gained from Mission College was really helpful as I
was able to co-relate things quickly when I dealt with them
practically. In addition
to accomplishing my learning objective, I was able to learn some
transferable skills which will help me in my future plan. Observing my
seniors helped me to understand that a person working in Human Resource
has to be patient, calm and focused all the time as Human Resource
department deals with variety of situations at one time -- starting
from benefits, policies, and compensation, to training and
people. As a result of
participating in this internship, I continue to have positive feelings
toward the field of Human Resources. At this moment I am looking for
jobs in the field of Human Resource. I feel that the experiences I had
in my internship, like hands on experience of different subdivision of
human resources and also transferable skills will definitely prove an
asset for my future jobs."
