Learning Communities

Fall 2006

What students say about Learning Communities-

"This learning community is like a neighborhood because everyone respects each other. We stick up for one another and we work together."

"It's not so much pressure because if you get stuck on something, then you can ask all three teachers and get different opinions."

"This learning community is different from the other classes I have taken. Everyone gets along, I trust the teachers a lot more, and the teachers care if you know the stuff they are teaching."

"This learning community is like a little extra part of a family where everybody suports each other. I don't feel too embarrassed to say somtheing."

A LEARNING COMMUNITY

  • is an innovative approach to learning designed for student success.
  • links two or more classes together with a common theme, content, and materials.
  • is a group of students and faculty working collaboratively in a friendly, supportive atmosphere.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS

The purpose of Learning Communities is to promote the success of our students by offering a better way to learn. We learn naturally by making connections between different ideas and experiences. In Learning Communities, we integrate two or more subjects to create a better and easier understanding of both. You work with the same community of students in the linked classes, helping each other succeed and making friends along the way. With some common readings and assignments, you learn more and complete more units with less stress.
