A survey of the political, economical, social and cultural history of the
United States from the settlement by native Americans to the present. History
17A analyzes the foundation of a Federal Constitution and early court activities,
the development of democracy, and the causes of the Civil War and development
of Reconstruction. History 17B traces the growth of the United States after
the Civil War, through the rise of industrialization and imperialism, the
advent of two world wars and include modern social and political history.

The course will examine California geographic regions, the Indians of California,
European discovery, institutions of Spanish California, the Mexican period,
and the early American period, the Economic foundations of the state, political
growth, and state and local institutions of California history in the 20th
