Spanish 1: Beginning Spanish
Credit:  5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Co-requisite: Spanish 1L 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
The student will acquire the basic skills for communication in Spanish: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The student will acquire a basic knowledge of Hispanic civilization and culture; geography, history, society, and the fine arts. 
Credit/No Credit Option 

Spanish 1L: Spanish Laboratory 
Credit: 1/2 unit 
Lab: 1.7 hours per week 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This is a separate laboratory course, offered by arrangement at the student's convenience, which aims to present the culture of the Spanish-speaking world through a variety of media. The student will review the customs and culture of Spanish-speaking countries through computer software, DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Students may also use the Spanish language programs to reinforce speaking skills and oral comprehension and to improve pronunciation. This course is a requirement for students enrolled in Spanish 1 and is designed to further enhance class material. It may also be taken independently, however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as most cultural materials have texts in both English and Spanish. May be repeated once for credit. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Spanish 2: Beginning Spanish
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: Spanish 1 with a grade of "C" or better, or its equivalent (2 years of high school Spanish) 
Co-requisite: Spanish 2L 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
Spanish 2 is a continuation of Spanish 1. The student will continue the acquisition of the basic skills for communication in Spanish: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The student will further his/her knowledge of Hispanic civilization and culture: geography, history, society, and the fine arts. 
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 2L: Spanish Laboratory 
Credit: 1/2 unit 
Lab: 1.7 hours per week 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of Spanish 1L, although Spanish 1L is not a prerequisite. The student will expand his/her knowledge of the customs and culture of Spanish-speaking countries through further use of computer software, DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. The student will continue to develop proficiency in Spanish language skills through a review of grammar, vocabulary-building exercises, culturally-authentic dialogues, readings, and multi-media studies in Hispanic civilization, traditions, customs, and values. 
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 4: Intermediate Spanish 
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: Spanish 3 with a grade of "C" or better, or its equivalent (4 years of high school Spanish), or demonstrated subject proficiency. 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of Spanish 3. The student will continue to develop proficiency in Spanish language skills through a review of grammar, vocabulary-building exercises, culturally-authentic dialogues, readings, and multi-media studies in Hispanic civilization, traditions, customs, and values. 
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 5: Advanced Spanish 
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: Spanish 4 with a grade of "C" or better, or its equivalent (4 years of high school Spanish), or demonstrated subject proficiency. 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of Spanish 4. It undertakes a thorough review of grammar for the further development of written and oral proficiency. Hispanic Civilization will be studied through selected topics in history, art, literature, theater, and drama. 
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 6: Advanced Spanish 
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: Spanish 5 with a grade of "C" or better, or its equivalent (4 years of high school Spanish), or demonstrated subject proficiency. 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of Spanish 5. It undertakes a thorough review of grammar for the further development of written and oral proficiency. Hispanic Civilization will be studied through selected topics in history, art, literature, theater, and drama.

Spanish 50A: Beginning Conversational Spanish and Culture
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Recommended eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
Designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning a language, this course emphasizes conversation and vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. A variety of classroom activities will permit the student to actively use the language while studying it. Cultural topics will center on everyday life today in Spanish-speaking countries.
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 50B: Beginning Conversational Spanish and Culture
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Spanish 50A with a grade of "C" or better, or demonstrated subject proficiency. 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of Spanish 50A. Students will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic grammatical structures while emphasizing conversation. The culture of Spanish-speaking countries will be presented through newspaper and magazine articles as well as a variety of audio-visual materials.
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 51A: Intermediate Conversational Spanish and Culture
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Spanish 50B with a grade of C or better, or demonstrated subject proficiency. 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
Students will enhance their ability to express themselves orally in Spanish. They will review basic grammar, learn new vocabulary, and participate in a variety of activities which will allow them to use Spanish while furthering their knowledge of the customs and culture of Spain and Latin America.

Spanish 51B: Intermediate Conversational Spanish and Culture
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Spanish 51A with a grade of C or better, or demonstrated subject proficiency.

This course is a continuation of Spanish 51A. Students will enhance their ability to express themselves orally in Spanish. They will review basic grammar, learn new vocabulary, and participate in a variety of activities which will allow them to use Spanish while furthering their knowledge of the customs and culture of Spain and Latin America.

Spanish 52A: Basic Medical Spanish
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours

This course provides students with instruction in Spanish language medical terminology which may be needed by hospital, police, and/or fire personnel. It is designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning a language. This course emphasizes conversation and vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. A variety of classroom activities will permit the student to actively use the language while studying it. A variety of audio-visual aids will be used in the presentation of this course. 
Credit/No Credit Option.

Spanish 58A: Immersion Spanish
Credit: 3 units 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
Spanish 58A is designed to give students the opportunity to be in a Spanish-speaking environment for a prolonged period of time. (i.e. Friday pm through Sunday pm) at an off-campus site that has appropriate facilities. Students are required to speak only Spanish during this extended period. Students pay Mission College tuition and fees as well as an addtional fee to cover food, lodging and other related expenses. There will be a mandatory Saturday or weekday-evening meeting early in the semester, before the immersion weekend, and another mandatory Saturday or weekday-evening meeting following the immersion weekend. Each student must complete an independent study program appropriate to his/her level of knowledge prior to the immersion weekend and complete an assignment to be handed in at the post-weekend meeting.
