This is a list of computer software, audio CDs, books, and magazines which are available in the Foreign Language Center, to be used in the FLC by students enrolled in Spanish classes at Mission College.
COMPUTER SOFTWARE
Panorama Interactive CD-ROM
These CDs contain audio-visual activities for the following sections for each chapter of your Panorama textbook: Contextos, Fotonovela, Pronunciación, Estructura, Panorama, and Quiz. At the bottom of the Interactive CD screen, you'll also find a Dictionary, a very helpful Verb Wheel (which will help you with proper conjugations of the verbs you're studying), and Grammar Terms (which explains the function of each grammar term, along with examples in Spanish and in English).
Panorama Video CD-ROM
This CD offers video dialogues and scenes from each chapter of your Panorama textbook.
Panorama Flash Cards-ROM
This software allows you to test yourself on the vocabulary from each chapter of your Panorama textbook.
Facetas Video & Interactive CD-ROM
This CD contains videos that accompany the Facetas text and also allows interactive activities related to each chapter.
Rosetta Stone CD-ROMs: Levels 1 and 2
Rosetta Stone is a language study program. It covers topics of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure with interactive exercises and a recording feature which allows students to compare their oral responses to the native speaker to check for proper pronunciation and intonation.
Berlitz Spanish CD-ROM
Berlitz is a self-taught Spanish language program.
Spanish: Talk Now! CD-ROM Talk Now! is designed for beginners who want to start learning a new language as soon as possible. Handy for business and pleasure, Talk Now! introduces the essential vocabulary needed to successfully communicate in Spanish.

Puente de Idiomas CD-ROM La Feria de los Idiomas Exploración de Idiomas
Although Puente de Idiomas, La Feria de los Idiomas, and Exploración de Idiomas do provide help with Spanish vocabulary, sentence structure, and words and phrases, they are language programs intended for children, so be prepared for cutesy graphics and sound effects. You can turn off the musical background and, if you can ignore the special effects for children, you can get some good practice with these programs.
Collins Spanish-English Talking Dictionary CD-ROM
This computerized dictionary allows you to look up words between Spanish and English.
Word Ace: Spanish CD-ROM
A translation dictionary and verb conjugations to and from English and Spanish.
Travel Tur CD-ROM
TravelTur allows students to work on vocabulary and sentence structure while virtually traveling to Spanish-speaking countries. Video clips and exercises provide practice.
GeoRunner CD-ROM GeoRunner is a world geography game. It provides a fun way to learn geography and interesting facts about the continents, oceans, countries, and geographic landmarks of the world. The object of the game is to search the world for hidden keys to free the main character, Blit. The game has 15 stages of difficulty with seven different areas of the world in each stage, for a total of 105 levels of play.
World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM
These CDs contain all the information found in the volumes of the 2003 World Book Encyclopedia.

Las Puertas Retorcidas Las Puertas Retorcidas is a book which introduces Spanish grammar and vocabulary through a mystery story. This CD allows you to listen to the story as it is read by native speakers. (The book is located on the "Spanish" bookshelf.)

This is an excellent book for students who are having difficulty understanding specific grammatical points of Spanish. The difficulty often lies in confusion about English grammar and then its counterpart in Spanish. This book helps to make such comparisons easier.
501 Spanish Verbs, 4th edition, by Christopher Kendris, Ph.D.
501 Spanish Verbs lists verbs with their full conjugations in all tenses and moods.
Practice Makes Perfect: Spanish Verb Tenses, by Dorothy D. Richmond.
This is a workbook which provides hundreds of verbs and their conjugations, and also offers clear, concise explanations that point out why a certain tense works in a given situation. Hundreds of exercises allow the student to practice (but please don't write your answers in the book!).
Correct Your Spanish Blunders, by Jean Yates.
This book explains how to avoid 99% of the most common mistakes made by learners of Spanish: for example, gender and numbers agreement, false cognates, confusing tenses, mixing up idioms, mispronunciation and misspellings. The book contains explanations, review passages, and self-correcting exercises.
Las Puertas Retorcidas (The Twisted Doors): The Scariest Way in the World to Learn Spanish!, by Dr. Kathie Dior. A bi-lingual Spanish-English illustrated mystery book with accompanying Audio CD, for beginning to intermediate level Spanish students. Read along and listen to the twists and turns of the story and improve your comprehension of spoken Spanish. Contains 46 chapters of the mystery with grammar sections after each chapter.(The CD is located in the plastic case with Spanish Supplementary software and audio CDs.)
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Learning Spanish, 3rd edition, by Gail Stein
Untie that twisted tongue! This is an easy-going, self-teaching guide that provides the necessary tools to learn the language: easy explanations of grammar and pronunciation; key phrases for travel, hotels, business, on-the-job, etc.; expanded vocabulary lists in Spanish and English; and "idiot-proof" verb tense charts and learnng tools that are crammed with important information.
Folk Wisdom of Mexico: Proverbios y dichos mexicanos by Jeff M. Sellers. This small book contains a bilingual collection of proverbs which have their roots in Spain, but which have evolved into distinctly Mexican adages. (Note: Some mistakes or mis-translations have been corrected in the book in ink by Dr. Rivas.)
First Spanish Reader edited by Angel Flores. A dual-language book for any beginner who has had beginning lessons in the Spanish language. Short stories, proverbs, jokes and poems that begin in simple tenses and vocabulary, gradually increasing in difficulty.
Short Stories in Spanish/Cuentos en español This volume of ten short stories allows students to enjoy a wide range of contemporary literature without having to constantly refer to a dictionary. Each Spanish story has the English translation on the facing page.
The Vintage Book of Latin American Stories An anthology of 39 short stories from several latin American countries, translated into English. Edited by Carlos Fuentes and Julio Ortega.
Cuando era Puertorriqueña, by Esmeralda Santiago. The story of a girl raised in Puerto Rico whose family moved to New York just as she was learning to appreciate her Puerto Rican cultural heritage. In New York, not only were the rules different, they were disconcerting. Esmeralda tells her story of overcoming adversity, gaining entrance into the Performing Arts High School and later continuing to Harvard from which she graduated with High Honors.
Casi una mujer by Esmeralda Santiago. This sequel continues the story begun in Cuando era Puertorriqueña, as the author describes leaving behind the barrios of Brooklyn for the theatres of Manhattan. The author tries to find a balance between being North American and being Puerto Rican.
Mexico: A Traveller's History
This book provides a complete and concise history and a description of the culture of México, including a listing of rulers (ancient and modern), a chronology of major events, and a variety of historical maps. Useful for students and tourists alike.
