This is a list of computer software, audio CDs, books, and magazines which are available in the Foreign Language Center, to be used in the FLC by students enrolled in French classes at Mission College.

COMPUTER SOFTWARE

Rosetta Stone CD-ROMs: Levels 1 and 2
Rosetta Stone is a language study program. It covers topics of grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure with interactive exercises and a recording feature which allows students to compare their oral responses to the native speaker to check for proper pronunciation and intonation.

French: Talk Now! CD-ROM
Talk Now! is designed for beginners who want to start learning a new language as soon as possible. Handy for business and pleasure, Talk Now! introduces the essential vocabulary needed to successfully communicate in French.

French World Talk CD-ROM
French World Talk builds on the fundamentals of Talk Now!, taking you to the next linguistic level with intermediate activities, added dictation and a recording section. Topics covered include the calendar, building sentences, asking directions, and using numbers.

French Talk to Me CD-ROM
Talk to Me ties together the fundamentals covered in Talk Now!and World Talk with lessons on pronunciation and dialogue. Using advanced speech recognition technology, Talk to Me allows you to converse with the software -- the next best thing to a personal tutor. This feature evaluates and corrects your intonation, stress, and rhythm of individual words and phrases.

French Interactive Picture Dictionary CD-ROM
The Interactive Picture Dictionary allows you to easily explore over 2000 words in French, Spanish, Italian, English and German. Using highly effective picture association techniques, the Interactive Picture Dictionary includes high-quality images, illustrations, video clips, and other memory-enhancing tools that make retaining vocabulary simple.

Who is Oscar Lake? CD-ROM
No repetitive drills or endless vocabulary lists on this CD! Oscar Lake plunges you directly into a foreign city where you must solve a puzzling mystery in a new language! With Oscar Lake, you learn by hearing, seeing and doing. Visual Language Learning: French
This software assists students in learning by audio-visual association. To learn common words and phrases, click on illustrations in 15 categories (e.g. city, classroom, restaurant, money, clothing, supermarket, numbers, weather, family relationships, etc.).

Exploration Linguistique CD-ROM
Although Le Pont des Langues, La Foire aux Langues and Exploration Linguistique, do provide help with French vocabulary, sentence structure, and French words and phrases, they are language programs intended for children, so be prepared for cutesy graphics and sound effects. You can turn off the musical background and, if you can ignore the special effects for children, you can get some good practice with these programs.

Word Ace: French CD-ROM
A translation dictionary and verb conjugations to and from English and French.

GeoRunner CD-ROM
GeoRunner is a world geography game. It provides a fun way to learn geography and interesting facts about the continents, oceans, countries, and geographic landmarks of the world. The object of the game is to search the world for hidden keys to free the main character, Blit. The game has 15 stages of difficulty with seven different areas of the world in each stage, for a total of 105 levels of play.

World Book Encyclopedia CD-ROM
These CDs contain all the information found in the volumes of the 2003 World Book Encyclopedia.

This dictionary of current English-French and French-English idioms is both amusing and educational. With comic-book-type drawings, the authors illustrate meanings behind slang terms in both French and English.

501 French Verbs. This book contains the full conjugations of all tenses of 501 common French verbs. It also gives a summary of meanings and uses of French and English verbs tenses and moods, the formation of present and past participles, helpful travel expressions, and many more features.

Au courant: Everyday Expressions Needed to Communicate in Simple French
Intended for Advanced Beginning through Upper Intermediate students, this outstanding supplemental book equips students with more than 200 practical expressions they need to communicate both in real-life situations and when faced with proficiency-type testing. The book is divided into three parts. Part I presents phrases and expressions that allow the student to express personal feelings, meet and interact with people, and talk on the phone. Part II offers opportunities to practice the expressions you've learned in a variety of situations. Part III is an appendix listing all the phrases presented in Au courant.

Test Yourself: French Grammar.
This book will help students to review basic French grammar and to test themselves BEFORE taking a classroom test. It is divided into chapters based on categories typically tested in first-year French classes, such as present tense, personal pronouns, subjunctive, adverbs, numbers, telling time, adjectives, possessive pronouns, etc. Each chapter contains a brief overview of the topic, a written test corresponding to that specific topic, the correct answers, and a self-diagnostic key to help students decide where they are still having trouble.

Short Stories in French/Nouvelles en français This volume of twelve short stories allows students to enjoy a wide range of contemporary literature without having to constantly refer to a dictionary. Each French story has the English translation on the facing page.

This book of readings and exercises is designed for intermediate French study.

Listen and Enjoy French Poetry.
This illustrated dual-language book, with the full original text of 39 great poems in French and line-for-line English translations on the facing pages, also contains critical and biographical information on each poet and, when available, a portrait of each. The book is accompanied by a 50-minute cassette tape on which the poems are recorded by native Frenchman Michel Moinot with authentic pronunciation, inflection and emphasis. Among others, poems included in this set are by Voltaire, Victor Hugo, Jean de la Fontaine, Paul Valéry, Charles Baudelaire, and Pierre de Ronsard.

Music that Teaches French: Original Songs for Beginning and Intermediate Students
features core vocabulary and structures from Level I French curricula by means of lively, catchy original tunes and clever, yet simple, lyrics. Each song included musical notation, French lyrics with English translations, and ideas for further study. Book has accompanying CD with the songs recorded.
