This course is designed for those whose first language is Portuguese. Emphahsis is on a comparison between Azorean, Peninsular, and Brazilian Portuguese. Included will be a study of the accomplishments of the Portuguese in the United States, some translation from Portuguese to English, and readings in Portuguese and Brazilian literature.

Designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning a language, this course emphasizes conversation and vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. The living conditions, modern culture, and traditions of Portugal and Brazil will also be introduced.

Portuguese 50B: Beginning Conversational Portuguese and Culture

This course is a continuation of Portuguese 50A. Students will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic structures while emphasizing conversation. The culture of Portugal and Brazil will be presented through newspaper and magazine articles as well as a variety of audio-visual materials.

Portuguese 51A: Intermediate Conversational Portuguese and Culture

Advisory: Portuguese 50B with a grade of "C" or better, or demonstrated subject proficiency.

Students will enhance their ability to express themselves orally in Portuguese. This course emphasizes conversation while allowing students to increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic structures. The course will include instruction in various aspects of Portuguese and Brazilian traditions and culture.
