Japanese 1: Beginning Japanese  
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
The student will learn the fundamentals of Japanese grammar, pronunciation, and two written syllabary systems -- hiragana and katakana, and be able to converse on a limited scale on topics of everyday importance. He/she will be able to record this same information in writing (primarily in romanji, or Romanized script), and will be able to understand written and spoken Japanese within the limits of the grammatical structures and vocabulary introduced in the course. Emphasis will be placed on communication and relevancy. The student will be personally involved in a variety of activities which encourage him/her to use the language creatively in meaningful situations. In addition, the student will be exposed to various aspects of the culture of the Japanese-speaking world. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Japanese 1L (formerly 11A): Japanese Laboratory  
Credit: 1/2 unit 
Lab: 1.7 hours per week 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This is a separate laboratory course, offered by arrangement at the student's convenience, which aims to present the culture of the Japanese-speaking world through a variety of media. The student will review the customs and culture of Japan through computer software, DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Students may also use the Japanese language programs to reinforce speaking skills and oral comprehension and to improve pronunciation. This course provides an excellent supplement to Japanese 1. It may be taken independently, however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as many cultural materials have texts in both English and Japanese. May be repeated once for credit. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Japanese 2: Beginning Japanese  
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: Japanese 1 with a grade of C or better or its equivalent (2 years of high school Japanese) 
Acceptable for credit: University of California; California State University 
 
Japanese 2 is a continuation of Japanese 1. In this course, the student will continue his/her development of speaking, reading, and writing skills, and increase his/her vocabulary and knowledge of basic Japanese grammar. More emphasis will be placed on self-expression and readings from topics of general interest. Cultural topics will include further exploration of the geography, history, society, and arts of Japan. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Japanese 2L (formerly 11B): Japanese Laboratory 
Credit: 1/2 unit 
Lab: 1.7 hours per week 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of Japanese 1L, although Japanese 1L is not a prerequisite. Japanese 3A is a continuation of Japanese 2 and is the first in a series of four, 3-credit, second-year Japanese language courses. Students will continue to develop proficiency in Japanese oral and written language skills through the study of new vocabulary and idioms, more advanced grammar structures, and mastery of the Japanese written scripts including new Kanji characters. Course activities will emphasize self-expression in speaking and writing on topics of everyday importance to demonstrate understanding of newly-learned language skills and historical/cultural topics. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Japanese 3B: Beginning Japanese  
(pending Curriculum Approval) 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Prerequisite: Japanese 3A with a grade of C or better or its equivalent

Japanese 3B is a continuation of Japanese 3A and is the second in a series of four, 3-credit, second-year Japanese language courses. Japanese 50A: Beginning Conversational Japanese and Culture 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
Designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning a language, this course emphasizes conversation and vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. A variety of classroom activities will permit the student to actively use the language while studying it. Cultural topics on everyday life in Japan today (food, customs and traditions, the family, etc.) will be presented through lectures, reading assignments, and videos. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Japanese 50B: Beginning Conversational Japanese and Culture 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Japanese 50A, or demonstrated subject proficiency 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
A continuation of Japanese 50A, in which further vocabulary is introduced and the student's conversational ability is expanded. The culture of Japan will be presented through newspaper and magazine articles, as well as a variety of audio-visual materials. 
Credit/No Credit Option. 

Japanese 99W: Intermediate Japanese 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Prerequisite: Japanese 2, or demonstrated subject proficiency 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
A continuation of Japanese 2, Intermediate Japanese is designed for the student who has successfully completed a one-year course mastering basic Japanese reading, writing, and speaking skills. The student will continue to develop intermediate-level language skills by learning new vocabulary, Kanji (Chinese pictographs), sentence structures, idioms, and cultural factors affecting oral and written communication. 
Credit/No Credit Option.
