Course Goals:
This course offers an introduction to listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills for beginning students of Italian. You will learn by practicing language used in everyday life. In addition, you will acquire an extensive knowledge of Italian culture, society, and way of life. 
Credit/No Credit option. 


Grading:
Your final grade will be based on successful completion of homework assignments, exams, quizzes, online activities, final exam, laboratory attendance, and class participation.

Grading scale :
A = 90% - 100%
B = 80% - 89%
C = 65% - 79%
D = 55% - 64%
F = 0% - 54%

Attendance and Homework Activities:
Attendance is mandatory. Students may be dropped from class if they fail to attend the first class meeting or when absences exceed 10 percent of the total number of hours the class meets during the semester. Refer to the syllabus dates and homework assignments, and obtain any handouts if you do miss a class. Be prepared to spend at least 10-12 hours a week OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME studying, reviewing, and memorizing the material.


Student Learning Outcomes

At the end of the Italian 1 course, students should be able to:
1) Speak, read, write, and understand a simple conversation, based on the following elements: introducing onself; salutations; description of one's house, family, and daily life; telling time; weather description; likes and dislikes.
2) Evaluate differences between formal and informal speech.
3) Write a simple letter to a friend describing a trip or a personal experience.
4) Identify some of the most important Italian cities, some works of art and music, and some historic events.
5) Utilize a bilingual dictionary and a grammar reference book efficiently.
6) Produce with native fluency and pronunciation a simple dialog based on everyday life activities.
7) Demonstrate critical thinking skills in comparing Italian and American cultures, analyzing similarities and explaining differences.

Demonstration of learning

The instructor will evaluate students' achievements based on oral and written exams, oral class presentations and activities, quizzes, midterm and final exams.

Improvement plan

Lab activities and a website are in place to help students with repetition of conversational patterns, listening training, pronunciation skill enhancement, exploration of cultural resources, art and music appreciation.
