Italian 1: Beginning Italian
Credit: 5 units Lecture: 5 hours
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59
Co-requisite: Italian 1L
Acceptable for credit: California State University
Students will acquire basic skills for communication in Italian: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will be exposed to a general overview of Italian civilization and culture.
Credit/No Credit option.

Italian 1L: Italian Laboratory
Credit: 1/2 unit Lab: 1.7 hours per week
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This is a separate laboratory course, offered by arrangement at the students' convenience, which aims to present the culture of Italy through a variety of media. Students will be exposed to the Italian culture through film, current publications, Internet research, and listening activities. Students may also use language computer programs to improve language skills and reinforce grammar. This course is a requirement for students enrolled in Italian 1 and is designed to further enhance course material. Italian 1L may also be taken independently, however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as many materials have texts in both English and Italian. May be repeated once for credit.

Italian 50A: Beginning Conversational Italian and Culture
Credit: 3 units Lecture: 3 hours
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59
Acceptable for credit: California State University
Designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning the fundamental aspects of the Italian language, this course emphasizes conversational skills and vocabulary-building with a moderate amount of grammar. The student is also introduced to the cultural aspects of Italy and Italian Switzerland through the use of audio-visual materials. Cultural topics (customs, cuisine, travel, traditions, etc.) and useful vocabulary (numbers, foods, telling time, clothing, etc.) will be further explored through classroom activities which encourage students to use the language in simulated situations.

Italian 50B: Beginning Conversational Italian and Culture
Credit: 3 units Lecture: 3 hours
Advisory: Italian 50A with a grade of "C" or better, or
demonstrated subject proficiency.
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This course is a continuation of Italian 50A. Students will increase
their vocabulary and knowledge of basic grammatical structures while
emphasizing conversation. The culture of Italy will be presented through
newspaper and magazine articles as well as a variety of audio-visual
materials.

Italian 51A: Intermediate Conversational Italian and Culture
Credit: 3 units Lecture: 3 hours
Advisory: Italian 50B with a grade of "C" or better, or demonstrated subject proficiency.
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This course will review basic grammar, introduce new vocabulary, and offer a variety of activities which allow students to use Italian while furthering their knowledge of the customs and culture of Italy.

Italian 51B: Intermediate Conversational Italian and Culture
Credit: 3 units Lecture: 3 hours
Advisory: Italian 51A with a grade of "C" or better, or demonstrated subject proficiency.
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This course is a continuation of Italian 51A. Conversation will be emphasized, along with vocabulary acquisition and idiomatic expression. The course will include cultural topics and a review of basic grammar principles, as well as the finer points of Italian grammar. Discussion topics will be chosen from current newspaper and magazine articles.
