French 1 : Beginning French
Credit: 5 units 
Lecture: 5 hours 
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Co-requisite: French 1L 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
Students will learn the fundamentals of French grammar and pronunciation and be able to converse on a limited scale about topics of everyday importance. They will be able to record this same information in writing and will be able to understand written and spoken French within the limits of the grammatical structures and vocabulary introduced in the course. Emphasis will be placed on communication and relevancy. Students will be personally involved in a variety of activities which encourage them to use the language creatively in meaningful situations. In addition, students will be exposed to various aspects of the culture of the French-speaking world.
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 1L: French Laboratory 
Credit: 1/2 unit 
Lab: 1.7 hours per week 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This is a separate laboratory course, offered by arrangement at the students' convenience, which aims to present the culture of the French-speaking world through a variety of media. Students will review the customs and culture of French-speaking countries through computer software, DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Students may also use the French language programs to reinforce speaking skills and oral comprehension and to improve pronunciation. This course is a requirement for students enrolled in French 1 and is designed to further enhance class material. It may also be taken independently, however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as most cultural materials have texts in both English and French. May be repeated once for credit. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 2: Beginning French 
Credit: 5 units
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: French 1 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent (2 years of high school French) 
Co-requisite: French 2L 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
In this course, students will continue their development of speaking, reading and writing skills, and increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic French grammar. More emphasis will be placed on self-expression and readings from topics of general interest. Cultural topics will include further exploration of the geography of France. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 2L: French Laboratory 
Credit: 1/2 unit 
Lab: 1.7 hours per week 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of French 1L, although French 1L is not a prerequisite. Students will expand their knowledge of the culture or language of French-speaking people through further use of computer software, DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Programs providing French language and pronunciation drill are also available. This course is a requirement for students enrolled in French 2 and is designed to further enhance class material. It may also be taken independently, however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as most cultural materials have texts in both English and French. May be repeated once for credit.

French 3: Intermediate French 
Credit: 5 units
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: French 2 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent

French 3 is a continuation of French 2. The student will continue to develop proficiency in French language skills through a review of grammar, vocabulary-building exercises, culturally-relevant dialogues, and readings regarding Francophone civilization. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 4: Intermediate French 
Credit: 5 units
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: French 3 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University 
 
French 4 is a continuation of French 3. The student will continue to develop proficiency in French language skills through a review of grammar, vocabulary-building exercises, culturally-relevant dialogues, and readings regarding Francophone civilization.

French 5: Advanced French

Prerequisite: French 4 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent

French 5 is a continuation of French 4. This course undertakes a thorough review of grammar for the further development of written and oral proficiency. Francophone civilization will be studied through selected social and cultural topics.

French 6: Advanced French 
Credit: 5 units
Lecture: 5 hours 
Prerequisite: French 5 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent 
Acceptable for credit: University of California, California State University

French 42: French Cultural Experience 
Credit: 3 units

French 42 is a two-part course consisting of preparation for and including a study tour of France. In the orientation part of the course, students learn the fundamentals of French pronunciation and receive an introduction to the French language, geography, and culture. Students will research contemporary customs and the locations to be visited. On-location instruction will include lectures on French history and art and French language practice. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 50A : Beginning Conversational French and Culture
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
Designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach to learning a language. Emphasis is on conversation and vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. A variety of classroom activities will permit the student to actively use the language while studying it. Cultural topics will center on everyday life in France today (food, customs and traditions, the family, etc.). A variety of audiovisual aids will be used in the presentation of this course. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 50B: Beginning Conversational French and Culture 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: French 50A 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of French 50A. Students will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic grammatical structures while emphasizing conversation. The culture of France will be presented through newspaper and magazine articles, as well as a variety of audiovisual materials. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 51A: Intermediate Conversational French and Culture 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: French 50B 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
Students will enhance their ability to express themselves orally in French. They will review basic grammar, learn new vocabulary, and participate in a variety of activities which will allow them to use French while furthering their knowledge of the customs and culture of France and other French-speaking countries.

French 51B: Intermediate Conversational French and Culture 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture: 3 hours 
Advisory: French 51A 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
This course is a continuation of French 51A. Conversation will be emphasized, along with vocabulary acquisition and idiomatic expression. The course will include cultural topics and a review of basic grammar principles. Discussion topics will be chosen from current newspaper and magazine articles. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 58A: Immersion French 
Credit: 3 units 
Lecture/Lab 
Prerequisite: French 1 or demonstrate appropriate competency 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
French 58A is designed to give students the opportunity to be in a French-speaking environment for a prolonged period of time. (i.e. Friday pm through Sunday pm) at an off-campus site that has appropriate facilities. Students are required to speak only French during this extended period. Students pay Mission College tuition and fees as well as an addtional fee to cover food, lodging and other extraordinary expenses. Each student must complete an independent study program appropriate to his/her level of knowledge prior to the immersion weekend and a post-weekend assignment. There will be a mandatory Saturday or weekday-evening meeting early in the semester. 
Credit/No Credit option. 

French 62: Introduction to the Culture of France 
Credit: 2 units 
Lecture: 2 hours 
Prerequisite: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59 
Acceptable for credit: California State University 
 
A multi-disciplinary introduction to the culture of France, taught in English. Topics include the regions of France, French food and wines, a brief introduction to the French language, Paris, French art, the French character, and business customs. Of interest for those who travel, do business with French companies, work in the food and restaurant industry, and for those wishing to expand their general kowledge of culture. 
Credit/No Credit option.
