Students will learn the fundamentals of French grammar and
pronunciation and be able to converse on a limited scale about topics of
everyday importance. They will be able to record this same information
in writing and will be able to understand written and spoken French
within the limits of the grammatical structures and vocabulary
introduced in the course. Emphasis will be placed on communication and
relevancy. Students will be personally involved in a variety of
activities which encourage them to use the language creatively in
meaningful situations. In addition, students will be exposed to
various aspects of the culture of the French-speaking world.

French 1L: French Laboratory
Credit: 1/2 unit
Lab: 1.7 hours per week

This is a separate laboratory course, offered by arrangement at the
students' convenience, which aims to present the culture of the
French-speaking world through a variety of media. Students will
review the customs and culture of French-speaking countries through computer software,
DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Students may
also use the French language programs to reinforce speaking skills and
oral comprehension and to improve pronunciation. This course is a requirement for students enrolled in French 1 and is designed to further enhance class material. It may also be taken independently,
however, by students not enrolled in a foreign language course as most
cultural materials have texts in both English and French. May be
repeated once for credit.

French 2: Beginning French
Credit: 5 units

Prerequisite: French 1 with a grade of C or better, or its equivalent
(2 years of high school French)

In this course, students will continue their development of
speaking, reading and writing skills, and increase their vocabulary
and knowledge of basic French grammar. More emphasis will be placed on
self-expression and readings from topics of general interest. Cultural
topics will include further exploration of the geography of
France.

French 2L: French Laboratory
Credit: 1/2 unit
Lab: 1.7 hours per week

This course is a continuation of French 1L, although French 1L is not
a prerequisite. Students will expand their knowledge of the culture
or language of French-speaking people through further use of computer software,
DVDs, CDs, videos, tapes, and current publications. Programs
providing French language and pronunciation drill are also available.
This course is a requirement for students enrolled in French 2 and is designed to further enhance class material. It may also be taken independently,

French 42: French Cultural Experience

French 42 is a two-part course consisting of preparation for and including a study tour of France. In the orientation part of the course, students learn the fundamentals of French pronunciation and receive an introduction to the French language, geography, and culture. Students will research contemporary customs and the locations to be visited. On-location instruction will include lectures on French history and art and French language practice.

Designed for those desiring a basic, practical conversational approach
to learning a language. Emphasis is on conversation and
vocabulary-building with a minimum of grammar. A variety of classroom
activities will permit the student to actively use the language while
studying it. Cultural topics will center on everyday life in France
today (food, customs and traditions, the family, etc.). A variety of
audiovisual aids will be used in the presentation of this course.

French 58A: Immersion French
Credit: 3 units

Prerequisite: French 1 or demonstrate appropriate competency
Acceptable for credit: California State University
French 58A is designed to give students the opportunity to be in a French-speaking environment for a prolonged period of time. (i.e. Friday pm through Sunday pm) at an off-campus site that has appropriate facilities. Students are required to speak only French during this extended period. Students pay Mission College tuition and fees as well as an addtional fee to cover food, lodging and other extraordinary expenses. Each student must complete an independent study program appropriate to his/her level of knowledge prior to the immersion weekend and a post-weekend assignment. There will be a mandatory Saturday or weekday-evening meeting early in the semester.

French 62: Introduction to the Culture of France

A multi-disciplinary introduction to the culture of France, taught in English. Topics include the regions of France, French food and wines, a brief introduction to the French language, Paris, French art, the French character, and business customs. Of interest for those who travel, do business with French companies, work in the food and restaurant industry, and for those wishing to expand their general kowledge of culture.
