Chinese 50A: Beginning Conversational Chinese (Mandarin) and Culture
Credit: 3 units
Lecture: 3 hours
Advisory: Eligibility for English 108A or English 59
Acceptable for credit: California State University
The student will learn a basic conversational approach to standard Chinese (Mandarin). This course
emphasizes conversation and vocabulary-building. A variety of classroom activities will permit the
student to use the language actively while studying it. Cultural topics will center on everyday life in
Chinese-speaking countries today (food, customs and traditions, the family, etc.). A variety of audio-visual materials will be used in the presentation of the course.
Credit/No Credit Option.

Chinese 50B: Beginning Conversational Chinese (Mandarin) and Culture
Credit: 3 units
Lecture: 3 hours
Advisory: Chinese 50A with a grade of "C" or better, or demonstrated proficiency.
Acceptable for credit: California State University
This course is a continuation of Chinese 50A. Students will increase their vocabulary and knowledge of basic grammatical structures while emphasizing conversation. They will add to the knowledge and understanding of customs, traditions, and daily life in Chinese-speaking countries today. A variety of audio-visual materials will be used in the presentation of the course.
