A basic course in speech communication which emphasizes the fundamentals
of extemporaneous speaking. Stressed are research, organization, reasoning,
style, and delivery of presentations; the role of the listener in oral
communication; and understanding the audience-speaker relationship.

Acceptable

This course is designed to provide students with practical experiences
in the decision-making processes of small groups. The student will demonstrate
his/her ability to interact in the small group by completing course objectives.
Course content emphasizes communication skills and theory important to
the problem-solving function of the small group, social-emotional function,
and the leadership function of the small group.
Note: UC credit may be limited. See a counselor.

8: Interpersonal Communication

This course involves practical communication skills useful for communicating
in one's personal life as well as working relationships. The student will
demonstrate interpersonal communication skills by completing course objectives.
Course content emphasizes communication skills and theory important in
improving interpersonal relationships. Topic areas include listening,
nonverbal communication, assertiveness, self-awareness, intercultural
communication and conflict resolution. Credit/No

12: Introduction to Intercultural Communication

Introduction to Intercultural Communication is an introductory course
examining the basic elements of interpersonal communication and culture
as the two relate to one another. Emphasis is given to the influence of
culture upon the interpretation of the communication act and to the communication
skills that enhance cross-cultural communication.

This course is designed for students who wish to upgrade their career
communication skills. This course is divided into four main areas of study
and skills practice: explaining and influencing in public speaking, leading
and participating in meetings, employment interviewing, and interpersonal/intercultural
communication in career situations.

Students can participate in a variety of speech communication activities,
including college-community symposium programs; intercollegiate competition
in individual speaking events and debate; individualized speech projects;
judging high school competition. Student will meet with instructor on
a one-to-one basis and in small groups for lecture-discussion on an arranged
basis. Credit/No Credit Option. May be repeated
one time.

A basic course in rhetorical theory and practice in argumentation and
debate, in which the students learn the means of discovering and supporting
