Why are students who are American Indian, African American, Latino and female underrepresented in math, science, engineering and technology? |
| 1. Survival Skills
Many students from underrepresented groups make significant personal adjustments in order to survive in the educational system.
Many members of underrepresented groups have particular styles and preferences which are absent in many classrooms of math, science, technology, and engineering. In fact, several of these missing styles and preferences are common characterisitics of students from all four underrepresented groups: American Indians, African Americans, Latinos, and women. Of course, one must be careful not to stereotype all members of a group as being the same. | |
