What if my class requires a PREREQUISITE?

Students seeking to enroll in any class that requires a PREREQUISITE or COREQUISITE must complete one of the following:

  • complete the PREREQUISITE or COREQUISITE class at Mission College
  • complete a placement test (for Math, Reading, English and ESL only).

STEP 1:

Check this grid to see if your prerequisite or corequisite course is listed.

STEP 2:

If your course is listed on the grid, submit your official transcript(s) to the Admission & Records Office and request prerequisite clearance(s) through the Student Enrollment and Services Center.

 STEP 3:

If you did not find your course on the list, but believe you have the knowledge or ability to succeed in the class, complete the Prerequisite Challenge Form and submit the form with supporting documentation to the appropriate department chair or designee. For more information about the math enrollment process check here.

Students may submit Prerequisite Challenge Forms for consideration during the following periods for the Summer and Fall 2015 registration cycle: April 06, 2015 - June 05, 2015 and August 10 – 24, 2015.

Students can submit their documents in one of the following ways:

1. Email the appropriate department chair or designee.  Be sure to include:

  • The Prerequisite Challenge Form
  • Supporting documentation
  • A copy of a photo ID (ie:  CA driver’s license, college ID or other government issued ID)

2. Meet with the appropriate department chair during designated office hours.  Be sure to bring:

  • Letter from an instructor verifying skills and knowledge requirements have been met.

  • A note of explanation.

STEP 4: If you believe the pre or corequisite class has:

  • Not been made reasonably available at Mission College, OR
  • A limitation on enrollment that is unlawfully discriminatory, OR
  • Limited enrollment to a special group of students, OR
  • A pre or corequisite that was established to protect the health and safety of students and despite that you do not pose a threat to yourself or other students, complete the Prerequisite Challenge Form and bring a note of explanation to the appropriate department chair or designee

STEP 5: If your request is approved, take your signed and approved Prerequisite

Challenge Form to the Assessment Center in Room E1-101, or email your approved copy to john.spencer@missioncollege.edu.  You will then be able to register online for the approved class after 24hrs or on your assigned registration date.

Can I use in-progress courses to clear a PREREQUISITE or COREQUISITE?

Unfortunately, at this time, in-progress courses from another institution CANNOT be used to clear a prerequisite or corequisite course.

How long will it take for my PREREQUISITE or COREQUISITE challenge to be reviewed?
